The Assembly of the Sarajevo Canton has accepted an initiative on Wednesday to adopt a decision on establishing a Holocaust Museum in Sarajevo.
The initiative, which was proposed by Social Democratic Party (SDP) representative, Damir Masic, requests the KS budget to include a section for financing the museum and for a suitable location for it to be chosen at a later date, in cooperation with the mayor and city council.
The only Holocaust museum in the region currently is located in Skopje and was founded in March 2011.
“I think that Sarajevo should have been that city because the most famous Haggadah in the world is kept there,” Masic said, calling Sarajevo a “cosmopolitan, multicultural, multiethnic, multi-confessional city with almost half a millennium of a tradition of coexistence.”
Bosnia’s capital would not be the same without its Jews, and apart from the victims of the Holocaust, those who protected their Jewish neighbours during the Nazi occupation must also be honoured and remembered, he said.
