On this occasion, the Sarajevo Canton Assembly and Government, together with the Association of Parents of Killed Children of Besieged Sarajevo 1992-1995, are organising a flower-laying ceremony on Monday at 10 am at the Memorial to the Killed Children of Besieged Sarajevo 1992-1995.

In 2019, the Government of Sarajevo Canton made the decision that May 5th would be marked as the Day of Remembrance for the Killed Children of Sarajevo.

According to data from the Association of Parents of Killed Children, 1,601 children were killed during the siege of Sarajevo.

The siege of Sarajevo began on April 5, 1992, and ended on February 29, 1996, lasting for 1,425 days. During the siege, 11,541 Sarajevo citizens were killed, including 1,601 children.

Sarajevo is home to the War Childhood Museum, whose exhibits remind of the horrors children endured and their daily lives. In the city centre, there is a memorial to the children killed between 1992 and 1995, as well as a memorial room.

To date, no one has been held accountable for the crimes committed against children during the siege of Sarajevo.
