According to the Federal Hydrometeorological Institute, Sarajevo has experienced minimal rainfall over the past 60 days, resulting in extreme drought conditions, as reported today by the Sarajevo Water and Sewerage Company (KJKP ViK).

This year has seen an unprecedented number of hot days in Sarajevo, with temperatures exceeding 30°C on 61 occasions. The winter of 2023-2024 was the warmest since 1951, and the trend of unfavorable hydrological conditions continued with the warmest spring on record, with an average temperature of 13°C.

Precipitation below 30-year average

The data shows that precipitation levels, both light and heavy, are below the 30-year average, leading to critically low water levels in the sources and wells that supply Sarajevo. One well, which normally holds 25 meters of water, currently has only 3.2 meters, nearing the critical shutdown level of 3 meters to protect equipment.

Nighttime water pressure reduction

Due to the severe hydrological situation, KJKP ViK will begin reducing water pressure at night starting Wednesday, August 28, 2024, to replenish reservoir levels and ensure regular daytime water supply. The pressure reduction will occur from 12:30 AM to 5:30 AM to minimize impact on residents.

KJKP ViK has deployed all available resources to quickly address leaks and urges residents to report any issues and use water conservatively until conditions improve. The company thanked the public for their understanding and cooperation in facing this challenging climate situation, which affects not only Sarajevo but the entire region and beyond.
