Bosnian flags are being hoisted across the capital, marking Independence Day which will be celebrated on March 1.

March first is unfortunately only marked in one of Bosnia's two semi-autonomous entities, the Federation (FBiH) and it is a non-working day. The Republika Srpska (RS) entity does not recognize March first as a holiday and therefore it does not celebrate it.

This year's March 1, marks the 29th anniversary since two-thirds of Bosnian citizens voted on the referendum for independence and said yes.

The referendum was attended by 2,073,568 voters, which represented a turnout of 63.6 percent, and almost everyone who exited the polls voted in favour of the country's independence. Only 0.3 percent or 6,037 people voted against it.

The results of the referendum enabled the international recognition of Bosnia and Herzegovina as an independent country. Since then, March 1 has been celebrated as Independence Day.

Bosnia became a member of the United Nations on May 22, 1992, when its national flag was hoisted in front of the UN headquarters in New York.
