Bosnian film director, Jasmila Zbanic, said on Tuesday that Sarajevo Mayor, Benjamina Karic, had asked her to serve as a pro-bono advisor, adding that she was honoured by the offer and will think about it.

The newly elected young mayor has been trying to mobilize more people of different profiles to help her run the city.

The offer was made during a reception Karic organized on Monday to honour the crew of the film “Quo Vadis, Aida?” – a movie about the Srebrenica Genocide which was nominated this year for the Oscar.

Zbanic immediately suggested to Karic that Sarajevo should establish closer relations with the Bosnian Serb-majority city of Banja Luka, the administrative centre of the Bosnia's Republika Srpska entity.

She also asked the mayor to turn the City Hall into a public library, which was the purpose of the building before the 1992-95 war, and to spend the city budget on projects for the youth, rather than on buildings.

“Ms Karic was already working on all those three ideas, . I believe that the mayor has started managing the city in a constructive and proactive way and that she knows the difference between fascism and anti-fascism,” Zbanic wrote on her Facebook wall.

Zbanic said she was protesting in front of the City Hall seven years ago against the city administration which she described as “corrupt” and that she was thrilled on Monday to see things were changing in Sarajevo.
