Sarajevo is marking the day of remembrance for the killed children of Sarajevo on Friday, May 5, in memory of 1,601 children that had lost their lives during the 44-month-long siege of Sarajevo during 1992-1996.

The day was proclaimed in 2019 by the government of the Sarajevo Canton and has been marked every year since then.

Since February 2020, the History Museum of Bosnia and Herzegovina has been collecting personal items of children killed during the siege of Sarajevo, which are displayed in the memorial ‘White Room’.

The terror against the citizens of Sarajevo lasted for 1,425. According to the verdicts of the UN court in The Hague, the attacks on civilians from the positions of the Bosnian Serb forces were constantly taking place, at any time of the day or night.

Stanislav Galic was sentenced to life imprisonment before the International Criminal Tribunal for the former Yugoslavia for the siege of Sarajevo, while Dragomir Milosevic, both former commanders of the Bosnian Serb military forces, was sentenced to 29 years in prison.
