The new curriculum for the 9th grade of elementary schools in Bosnia’s Republika Srpska (RS) entity has caused a great commotion among the public. Namely, the curriculum now proposes that students learn about war criminals Radovan Karadzic and Ratko Mladic as heroes of the Serb people, instead of convicted war criminals.

For this reason, High Representative Christian Schmidt met on Wednesday with RS Vice President Camil Durakovic in Banja Luka. The two exchanged views on the current political developments in BiH, with a particular focus on the position of returnee communities in the RS.

The High Representative noted that secessionist and authoritarian tendencies, along with negative and divisive rhetoric, are hindering progress on the path to reforms and integration, which has real-life consequences for all BiH citizens. Political elites must demonstrate genuine commitment to addressing these challenges in the spirit of shared priorities for the benefit of everyone, the High Representative said.

Durakovic stated yesterday that in addition to war criminals, children will also learn about the causes and consequences of the “Defensive-Patriotic War”, but they will skip genocide, ethnic cleansing and the entire range of crimes against humanity committed by members of the Republika Srpska Army.
