Serbia marks anniversary of Novi Sad tragedy that claimed 16 lives

Commemorative gatherings are being held across Serbia to mark the anniversary of the tragic collapse of the railway station canopy in Novi Sad, which claimed 16 lives and left one person seriously injured.

In Novi Sad, citizens symbolically gathered at 16 different locations, representing each of the victims, before marching toward the city’s railway station to pay their respects.

On Friday evening, thousands of students and citizens from across the country arrived in Novi Sad, and by Saturday morning, several thousand more joined the remembrance events throughout the city.

Organised by the Serbian diaspora, memorial gatherings are also taking place in cities around the world. Serbia and Republika Srpska have both declared today a Day of Mourning.

The canopy at Novi Sad’s railway station collapsed on November 1, 2024, at 11:52 am, killing 14 people instantly, including four children aged six, ten, sixteen, and seventeen, while three others were seriously injured. Two of the injured later succumbed to their wounds.

Currently, three investigations are underway, with only one indictment confirmed, though the court proceedings have yet to begin.
