The head of the Serbian Orthodox Church, Patriarch Porifirije, met with political party leaders in Bosnia’s Serb-majority Republika Srpska (RS) entity on Wednesday evening, but neither the leader of the ruling party in the entity nor RS opposition leaders, would reveal details about the meeting.

The Patriarch arrived in the northern town of Doboj, where he was welcomed by scores of citizens and political leadership in the semi-autonomous entity.

The Serb member of BiH’s tripartite Presidency and leader of the Alliance of Independent Social Democrats (SNSD), Milorad Dodik, as well as his fiercest critics from the opposition in the entity, among them the leader of the opposition Serb Democratic Party (SDS), Mirko Sarovic, attended the meeting.

However, neither of them would comment on what was discussed.

RS President, Zeljka Cvijanovic, a member of Dodik’s party, only said that the two-hour meeting was “excellent.”

The leader of the opposition Party for Democratic Progress (PDP), Branislav Borenovic, said it was “a very useful conversation.”

“The patriarch showed maximum attention. It is important to preserve dignity, look for solutions, be wise and sober,” he said.

On the second day of his visit to the town, the religious leader will attend a series of religious ceremonies, followed by speeches.
