Serbian President Aleksandar Vucic said on Wednesday that any decision taken in Bosnia and Herzegovina should be agreed by all three of the country’s constituent nations and should not be imposed.
“That is the essence of the Dayton Agreement, not imposed solutions,” he told reporters after a meeting with the political leaders of the Republika Srpska (RS), Bosnia's Serb-majority region.
The meeting is being held days after the new International Community High Representative Christian Schmidt took over from Valentin Inzko who introduced a ban on genocide denial, drawing fierce reactions from Bosnian Serb politicians.
Vucic said that the only decisions acceptable to official Belgrade are those which are acceptable to the Serbs, Bosniaks and Croats in the neighboring country. He said that Serbia wants to see the Dayton Agreement respected in order to preserve the peace and stability of the region.
“We respect the territorial integrity of Bosnia and Herzegovina and the Republika Srpska within Bosnia and Herzegovina and we will continue to act responsibly in line with the Dayton Agreement,” he said, referring to the 1995 peace deal which ended the Bosnian war in the early 1990s and set up the country's constitutional system-
The Serbian President said he heard what the Republika Srpska leadership had to say on important issues.
Milorad Dodik, the Serb member of Bosnia's tripartite Presidency also addressed the media following the meeting, saying that the “foreign factor” is acting against Republika Srpska and to “destroy the Serbs’ identity.”
He said it was “almost impossible” for the Serbs to live in BiH. “The history showed it and the present shows it as well,” he added.
Dodik said he asked the President of Serbia to understand this situation.
Commenting on the newly appointed High Representative, he said he cannot accept “the legitimacy of the man who is introducing himself as a high representative.”
“They wish to form a firm border on the Drina river and that's not what we want,” he added.
Dodik also said that Republika Srpska is devoted to peace.
