Serbia’s Interior Affairs Ministry said that former top police official in Bosnia’s Federation (FBH) entity, Edin Vranj, who was arrested as he crossed the BiH-Serbia border, is suspected of involvement in crimes against prisoners of war.

According to the ministry, Vranj is suspected of participation in the harassment and beatings of Serb war prisoners who were members of the army of Republika Srpska, the Serb-majority entity in BiH, between January 1993 and October 1994.

Vranj will be detained for 48 hours and will then be forwarded to the War Crimes Prosecutor’s Office in Belgrade, along with a criminal complaint, it said.

Bosnia’s Ambassador in Serbia, Aida Smajic, said that the embassy sent an urgent note to Serbia’s Foreign Affairs Ministry, asking it for “detailed, complete and, of course, official information” about the arrest, in order to provide Vranj with legal and consular protection.

Bosnia’s Foreign Affairs Minister, Bisera Turkovic, said that her ministry will “immediately get involved in the case and provide all possible assistance” to Vranj.
