Bosnia and Herzegovina’s Prosecutor's Office on Wednesday filed war crimes charges against six former Bosnian Serb army and police members over the killing of numerous Bosniak civilians in two villages near Kljuc in northwestern BiH.

The indictment concerns one of the BiH war’s most brutal mass atrocities. On 10 July 1992, as part of an ethnic cleansing operation in the Bosanska Krajina region, Bosnian Serb paramilitary and police forces attacked the villages of Gornji and Donji Biljani.

The six accused – Braco Maric (61), Dragan Vukic (55), Ranko Samardzija (65), Savo Jokic (63), Miso Adamovic (54) and Milorad Kaurin (56) are charged with unlawfully detaining civilians, then killing them, either individually or in groups. Bodies were recovered and exhumed after the war, with at least 258 civilians documented killed. Victims ranged from four-month-old Amila Dzaferagic to 85-year-old Beco Cehic.

The six now face charges of crimes against humanity. Jovo Kevac, former commander of the Sanski Battalion of the Bosnian Serb army, is standing trial for these killings, while former soldier Marko Samardzija, also involved, was sentenced to seven years in prison.
