Smoke from Bosnia wildfire spreads across Dalmatia

Nenad Periš of the Split-Dalmatia County Institute of Public Health said particulate levels were several times above usual levels across the county, including the islands. The measured levels were above the recommended long-term value but remained well below the EU threshold at which healthy people would be advised to stay indoors.

The levels recorded were 2–3 on the EU scale of 1 to 6, indicating elevated pollution. They should not pose problems for healthy people, but older people, young children and those with respiratory or allergic conditions were advised to avoid going outdoors or wear masks. The situation is being monitored closely.

The Croatian Firefighting Association urged residents not to call firefighters simply to report smoke, saying such calls were placing unnecessary strain on emergency lines.

County fire chief Ivan Kovačević told Hina that the wind, which picked up on Saturday evening, had carried smoke from the wildfire in BiH towards Dalmatia, from Split to Pelješac, with the smoke also visible from the island of Brač. He described it as a "white haze" accompanied by the smell of burning.

He said it was impossible to predict how long the smoke would persist, as its spread depended on wind direction. Firefighters in Imotski and Makarska said the smoke was coming from the wildfire in the area between Tomislavgrad and Rama in southern BiH.
