Extreme poverty and hunger prevail throughout the country, and two-thirds of the population are dependent on humanitarian aid. The consequences of the conflict were further aggravated by catastrophic floods in the previous three years. South Sudan seceded from Sudan in 2011, but two years later civil war broke out between ethnic groups in the new state. Despite the 2018 peace agreement, disputes and conflicts continue, and civilians continue to die.

Peter van der Auweraert, the head of IOM in South Sudan, and former representative of this organization in Bosnia and Herzegovina spoke for N1.
