The Association "Mothers of the Srebrenica and Zepa Enclaves" and the Association of Genocide Victims and Witnesses said Wednesday that they demanded an apology from the Montenegrin Justice Minister Vladimir Leposavic for denying the Srebrenica genocide On March 30, 2021, but they have not received it yet, the Association "Mothers of the Srebrenica and Zepa Enclaves" said Wednesday in a letter to the Montenegrin government.
“Unfortunately, the Montenegrin and regional public did not apologize, which is in favour of the opinion that Minister Leposavic is part of a nationalist policy which, through denial of genocide and relativization of crimes, aims to prevent reconciliation in the former Yugoslavia. The genocide in Srebrenica has been proven through a series of court verdicts, and one of the last verdicts was handed down recently to Ratko Mladic,” the Association said.
They recalled that the UN Court confirmed Mladic's life sentence for the murder of over 8,000 Bosniaks in the genocide in Srebrenica in July 1995.
“It is devastating for the Government of Montenegro to have ministers in its own ranks who deny genocide and other war crimes, only because of their ethnic and religious affiliation and a motive to self-identify with criminals. Gathering in front of the Ministry of Justice, Human and Minority Rights is a humane and well-intentioned activity that helps the citizens of Montenegro to identify with the victims of genocide in Srebrenica and show respect and solidarity with genocide survivors, their families, descendants, compatriots,“ the Association wrote.
They called on the Montenegrin MPs to reject the policy and practice of denying the Srebrenica genocide and war crimes and to relieve Vladimir Leposavic of further duties in the Government of Montenegro.
“Montenegro deserves to step out and not be recognized by nationalism, genocide denial, glorification of war criminals, hatred and support for Greater Serbia's plans,” they said at the end of the letter.
Montenegrin Justice, Human and Minority Rights Minister Vladimir Leposavic said in late March that he is ready to recognize that the crime of genocide was committed in Srebrenica “when it gets proven unequivocally.”
