Srebrenica Memorial Center Director criticises European Commission over Mladic funeral response

Suljagic recalled an earlier statement by EU Commissioner for Enlargement Marta Kos, who noted that she "could not look the mothers of Srebrenica in the eye if she went to Belgrade on the very days of the war criminal's funeral." He highlighted that actions currently being prepared in Brussels contradict that stance.

"If what I am hearing from Brussels is true, Marta Kos plans to meet early next week with Chetnik Duke Andrija Mandic, who is the Speaker of the Parliament of Montenegro. If this information is confirmed, it is obvious that Commissioner Kos, through her meeting with Mandic, is helping to save him from dismissal," Suljagic posted on the social media platform X.

Suljagić pointed out that the Parliament of Montenegro is scheduled to vote on Mandic’s dismissal on 24 September. The vote follows a telegram Mandic sent to the family of Ratko Mladic, in which he "glorified a criminal convicted of genocide."

"If it is possible to look the mothers of Srebrenica in the eye, then it is time for Marta Kos to explain why," Suljagic concluded.

Ratko Mladic, former commander of the Army of Republika Srpska, was sentenced to life imprisonment in 2017 by the International Criminal Tribunal for the former Yugoslavia for genocide and crimes against humanity committed during the 1992–1995 war in Bosnia and Herzegovina. Alongside Mladic, former Republika Srpska President Radovan Karadzic and three others were also sentenced to life imprisonment for the Srebrenica genocide. Mladic's trial commenced on 16 May, 2012, spanning 530 trial days, with testimony from 592 witnesses and nearly 10,000 exhibits presented.

Mladic died on 27 August at the age of 83 in a prison hospital in The Hague. He was buried on 7 September with military honours at Topcider Cemetery in Belgrade.
