The Srebrenica Memorial Center announced that the High Representative for BiH had written a letter warning the State Prosecutor's Office that possible abuses of the electoral process should be dealt with seriously and expeditiously, while even a year after the passing of the Law on the Prohibition of Genocide Denial, he did not warn about the dozens of cases in which such denial had taken place.
“We should remind the incumbent High Representative Christian Schmidt that even after the passing of the Law on the Prohibition of Genocide Denial, there were records of dozens of cases of open genocide denial by politicians and public officials who did not hesitate to publicly deny it. Genocide victims and survivors are still exposed to various verbal attacks, denial and belittling. It seems to us that this attitude of the High Representative is still in favour of those who have been deniers all these years,” said Sevket Hafizovic, the chairman of the Board of Directors of the Srebrenica Memorial Centre.
According to him, more than a year has passed since the entry into force of the said Law and the High Representative did not find the time to inform the Prosecutor's Office of BiH about the “serious and expeditious action” against those who continue to deny this crime and thereby contribute to the expansion of hatred, divisions and humiliation of victims of the genocide in Srebrenica.
“Not punishing such a violation of the Law is just an additional humiliation of the survivors, and at the very least, it is hypocritical on the part of Christian Schmidt to inform the prosecutors of a possible violation of the electoral law, to introduce unfair solutions, while being a year too late with the implementation of the Law on the Prohibition of Genocide Denial, which, I stress, entered into force on July 28, 2021,” Hafizovic said.
