Defiance of the Constitutional Court threatens not just the rule of law but also the stability, security, and prosperity of Bosnia and Herzegovina, a spokesperson for the US Department of State said in response to a law adopted earlier this week in entity parliament of Bosnia's Republika Srpska entity, stipulating the non-application of the BiH Constitutional Court's decisions on its territory.

“The Republika Srpska National Assembly adopted a law this week intended to nullify the Constitutional Court’s authority in the entity. This law violates the Bosnia and Herzegovina Constitution, and runs counter to the Dayton Peace Agreement,” spokesman Matthew Miller said in a statement.

The comment comes two days after the law was adopted, sparking reactions in a part of the international community in Bosnia and Herzegovina, who condemned the law calling it “reckless” and “illegal.”

The State Department spokesperson warned that the defiance of the Constitutional Court threatens not just the rule of law but also the stability, security, and prosperity of Bosnia and Herzegovina.

“Combined with the anti-Dayton rhetoric by some Republika Srpska leaders, the law represents a dangerous escalation in secessionist threats. The United States strongly supports the territorial integrity, sovereignty, and multiethnic character of Bosnia and Herzegovina. We will continue to hold individuals engaged in activities that run counter to the Dayton Peace Agreement responsible for their actions,” he added.
