
Cardiologist, human rights advocate and the granddaughter of late Yugoslav leader Josip Broz 'Tito', Svetlana Broz, has passed away at the age of 70 in Belgrade.
She was a prominent fighter for human rights and the author of the acclaimed book Good People in an Evil Time, which went through seven editions and was translated into six world languages. Her other works include I Have the Guts, The Righteous of Rwanda Between Oblivion and Reconciliation, Gojer’s Galaxy, and Mine. She was also a co-author of numerous books on peace studies worldwide.
As the founder and director of the NGO Gariwo in Sarajevo, she was among the first in Europe to create and lead educational programs on civil courage through public lectures, the School of Civil Courage, publishing activities (over 60 books), and by establishing the Dusko Kondor Award for civil courage and its promotion. She also produced over 40 documentary films about award laureates.
Broz lectured at 52 universities in the United States and 80 universities across Europe.
She was an honorary citizen of Tuzla (Bosnia and Herzegovina) and a recipient of the French National Order of Merit, Italy’s L'Ambrogino d'Oro and La Bussola dell’ Educazione Margherita Zoebeli, and was recognized as a Righteous Among Nations at the World Park of the Righteous in Milan, Italy.
Her cremation will take place on March 26 at 2:15 PM at the Novo Groblje cemetery in Belgrade.
