Hungarian Minister of Foreign Affairs and Trade Peter Szijjártó stated that the stability of the Balkans and peace are crucial for the security of the European continent.

Szijjártó said that the EU needs to introduce serious changes in its policy, and that it is not about talking about the leaders of Balkan countries, but rather talking with them.
He emphasized that each country has the right to decide on its own destiny, future, and leaders.

“There is no place for any external interference in this matter. In Hungary’s cooperation with Republika Srpska, we respect the democratic decision of the citizens, and that’s how we cooperate with the President of RS, Milorad Dodik, and the leadership of BiH,” said Szijjártó after a meeting with the Chairman of the Presidency of BiH, Zeljka Cvijanovic.

He emphasized that Hungary follows a responsible policy with its neighbors and that, in this context, it is clear that peace and stability in the Balkans are of utmost importance for Hungary.

“Peace and stability are an indispensable condition in the Balkans, and this is a continuous dialogue based on mutual respect,” said Szijjártó.

He mentioned that he discussed security issues in the Balkans with Cvijanovic, arguing that Brussels' policy has become practically absurd at the moment when U.S. President Donald Trump is doing everything in his power to finally bring peace to Europe.

“Of course, all of that is absurd. The same absurdity can be observed in Brussels' policy toward the Balkans,” said Szijjártó, adding that decisions and statements are being made in Western Europe that fundamentally undermine the peace of the region.
