The thief who stole the statue of movie star and kung fu master Bruce Lee, from the centre of Mostar, was sentenced to ten months in jail, on Wednesday.
The Municipal Court in Mostar accepted the settlement reached by the Prosecutor's Office of the Herzegovina-Neretva Canton with the 46-year-old perpetrator, who was previously known for a series of other criminal offences.
The verdict said that D.P. first robbed a shop where he stole tools, after which he broke off a bronze statue of Bruce Lee in the Zrinjevac City Park in early March, took it and sawed it in half to sell as a secondary raw material.
Not long after that, the police found the thief and arrested him.
The Municipal Court in Mostar assessed that ten-month imprisonment would suffice.
The Bruce Lee statue was placed in the central park of Mostar in 2005 on the initiative of the head of the non-governmental association “Urbani pokret – Mostar”, now MP Nina Raspudic and Veselin Gatal.
By erecting a statue of the movie star, they tried to make Mostar recognizable worldwide for motives other than war and destruction and to be a symbol of resistance to all injustices.
The authorities are trying to repair the statue and place it in the same place in the centre of the city on the pedestal where his name still stands.
