On this day, May 22, 1992, Bosnia and Herzegovina became a member of the United Nations (Resolution 757), thus, as the successor of the former Yugoslavia, it became a contracting party to all conventions and agreements ratified by the Yugoslavia.

BiH participates in the work of the United Nations through permanent representations in New York, Geneva, and Vienna, as well as at UNESCO in Paris.

The relations between Bosnia and the United Nations are conditioned by the current international political and economic situation, which is directed by monitoring and active participation in the resolution of global crises, UN bodies in which BiH is a member, potential election to the bodies for which BiH is applying, as well as dynamics of work in those bodies. According to Anadolu Agency, political issues are mainly related to monitoring the work of the Security Council and the Assembly and its committees.

On May 22, 1992, the BiH flag with lilies flew in front of the UN building and at the same time this date represents one of the most significant dates in the history of Bosnia and Herzegovina.

The then Minister of Foreign Affairs of the Republic of Bosnia and Herzegovina, Haris Silajdzic, addressed the UN General Assembly, and the chairman of the State Presidency, Alija Izetbegovic, attended the reception.

Slovenia and Croatia were admitted to the UN on the same day.
