English ice dancers Jayne Torvill and Christopher Dean announced on the 40th anniversary of their legendary performance in Sarajevo, where they won Olympic gold in 1984, that they will have their last dance together next year. The couple has returned to Sarajevo, the city where they had skated Bolero on the ice stage of the Zetra Olympic Hall, to mark the jubilee of their famous dance.

Speaking to BBC, Torvill said the tour that will mark the 50th anniversary of their work together in 2025 will be their final time skating together.

Dean added it felt “right” because 2025 is their 50th year of skating together.

The Valentine's Day Bolero performance in 1984 was what made the couple the highest-scoring figure skaters of all time for a single programme, according to BBC. Judges gave them a dozen perfect 6.0s and six 5.9s, which included artistic impression scores of 6.0 from every judge.

And now, 40 years later, Torvill and Dean are back in Sarajevo. They were welcomed by Mayor Benjamina Karic.

They are set to visit the Olympic village and perform the 2024 adaptation of the dance they won the gold for.

Torvill said it felt “surreal” to enter the Olympic Hall 40 years later, the venue that was destroy in the Bosnian war of the 1990s and then rebuilt for the same place.

“We didn't know we would be talking about Bolero all these years on,” she told BBC.

When the pair triumphed in Sarajevo, they were already established international stars who won at their domestic, European and World competitions. But, the Olympic gold in Sarajevo brought them more fame.

In their hometown Nottingham, Torvill and Dean were celebrated as true stars.

They were welcomed in a central square and had another square named in their honour – Bolero Square.

On the 30th anniversary, the ice skaters recreated their 1984 performance to mark the occasion, which they will do again these days in Sarajevo, on the 40th anniversary.

For years, Torvill and Dean have been an inspiration to the many, both in their home country and abroad.

According to BBC, an ice skating coach in Notthingham, Katie Kirby, said the two inspired her to start ice skating when she was a child.

Today, they inspire the young ice skaters in Bosnia as well.

They shared their skills with kindergarten kids in the Zetra hall and as of Wednesday they will be hosted at the Sarajevo Open Figure Skating Competition as special guests of the Skating Gala at the same event.

Fun fact is that Torvill and Dean gave up their careers to become a full-time skaters – Torvilll as an insurance clerk and Dean as now former police officer.

After the victorious performance at the 1984 Sarajevo WinterOlympic Games, they were named name joint Sports Personality of the Year at the BBC ceremony.
