Mosques are a symbol of unity of all people and a sign of brotherhood for all Muslims, and our non-Muslim friends are welcome to visit this mosque as well, Turkey’s President, Recep Tayyip Erdogan said in a speech at the opening of the Havadza Durak Mosque in Sarajevo.
Erdogan is on an official visit to Bosnia, where he will meet with the members of BiH’s tripartite Presidency and be the best man at the wedding of the daughter of Bakir Izetbegovic, the leader of the strongest Bosniak party in the country, the Party of Democratic Action (SDA).
Upon arrival, the Turkish president visited the grave of his late friend Alija Izetbegovic, the country’s first president and grandfather of the bride.
He attended the main Friday prayer at the Old Town’s Ottoman-era Mosque, locally known as the Bascarsija Mosque, built in the 16th century and refurbished thanks to a Turkish donation.
Erdogan noted that the restoration of the mosque was completed last year and that the plan initially was to ceremonially open it in March 2020, but that this was postponed due to the coronavirus pandemic.
“Today I live this happy moment together with you when we open this mosque,” he said.
The opening ceremony was attended by BiH Presidency Member Sefik Dzaferovic, Turkish Trade Minister Mehmet Mus, Culture Minister Mehmet Nuri Ersoy, Turkish Communications Directorate President Fahrettin Altun, Turkish Presidency Spokesman Ibrahim Kalin and many other officials and citizens.
Erdogan will meet with the three Presidency members later on Thursday and will leave for Montenegro the next day.
