A central commemoration marking the 30th anniversary of the Srebrenica genocide, the deadliest atrocity in Europe since World War II, will take place Wednesday in the grand hall of Birmingham’s City Council House.
The solemn event will bring together regional leaders, religious representatives, survivors, and members of the public from across the West Midlands.
Organised by Remembering Srebrenica and the BiH UK Network, under the patronage of the Mayor of Birmingham, the ceremony will honour the memory of over 8,000 Bosniak men and boys murdered in July 1995. The Srebrenica genocide has been ruled by international courts as the largest war crime in Europe since 1945.
One of the most poignant moments of the event will be the testimony of Sara Hukic, a survivor who was a child during the massacre.
"This is more than remembrance, it's a call to action," said Dr Anes Ceric, Executive Director of the BiH UK Network and Honorary Consul of Bosnia and Herzegovina for the Midlands. She said she was grateful to the British public and institutions for preserving the memory of Srebrenica not only through mourning but also through a shared hope for a better future.
Dr Waqar Azmi OBE, Chair of Remembering Srebrenica, added that despite unimaginable pain, the survivors never sought revenge, only justice and peace. Their strength reminds us why we must stand against hatred and build communities grounded in unity and respect.
The commemoration will be livestreamed on the BiH UK Network’s Facebook page from 1:15 PM London time: www.facebook.com/bhuknetwork
According to organisers, the event reflects the United Kingdom’s enduring commitment to educating new generations about the dangers of hatred and division, and to honouring the lives that were violently cut short.
