"I thank the BiH Armed Forces, who helped keep illegal migrants out of the open. The migrants were left at the mercy of international agencies (IOM, UNHCER, DRC) that spend EU funds and whose mission is to monitor migrants on their path," Mustafa Ruznic, the Prime Minister of Una-Sana Canton, in the north-west of Bosnia, said Friday.
Ruznic noted that migrants were also abandoned by the competent BiH institutions.
He thanked the Armed Forces for relieving the pressure from the City of Bihac and its residents so they would not be “held captive by the notorious camp Bira which has been destroying Bihac for the past 24 months.”
“The camp that will soon get a judicial-prosecutorial finale for everything that was done inside it while there were illegal migrants in it (from building and use permits for people, through public procurement, to taxes, etc.). We will continue to provide food and hygiene supplies to the abandoned illegal migrants now when they have a roof over their head according to the decisions of the Operational Group,” he pointed out and added:
“Now when they've made the promises which they've been making this whole time, they can start uninterrupted works on the Lipa camp and begin the displacement of the living containers from Bira. It is up to BiH Security Ministry to prove whether they've been telling the truth that the camp will be completely operational by March 31, 2021.
Bosnia's tripartite Presidency decided Friday that BiH Armed Forces should set army tents in the location of the Lipa migrant camp in north-west of the country, from where the state authorities attempted to move the 900 migrants to a better-suited location just south of Sarajevo, but the locals and the local authorities protested the decision arguing that no one consulted them about it and that they are unable to accommodate 900 migrants.
EU's senior-most officials warned Bosnia that unless they accommodate the migrants back to the Bira camp situated in the centre of Bihac, the country would suffer consequences, without going into detail as to what they might be.
Bihac local authorities closed the Bira camp in which the EU invested some €3.5 million, citing constant unrest and attacks on residents and their property by migrants residing in that camp.
