The US Embassy on Saturday paid tribute to Sarajevo civilians, killed during the 1992-95 siege, the longest siege of a city in the modern history.
“Today, we commemorate the start of the Siege of Sarajevo in 1992 – a relentless 1,425-day nightmare that the brave citizens of Sarajevo endured,” the embassy posted on X.
“We honor and pay tribute to the thousands of civilians – men, women, and children of all ages – who were killed by Army of Republika Srpska forces under the command of convicted war criminals such as Stanislav Galic and Dragomir Milosevic in the longest siege in modern history,” it added.
On this occasion, the embassy reaffirmed the US’ “commitment to truth, justice, and the reconciliation needed to forge a brighter future for Bosnia and Herzegovina.”
Sarajevo marks April 6 as the Day of the City, in memory of the 1945 liberation from fascism and the 1992 start of the 1,425-day siege.
