NATO's focus in Bosnia and Herzegovina is on a strong partnership and the door to membership remains open, the US Embassy said on Friday, welcoming the formation of Bosnia's state-level commission for cooperation with NATO.
“The Commission will allow BiH to effectively coordinate and implement the Reform Programme. The Reform Programme process is BiH's opportunity to identify its own reform priorities and how it envisions Alliance assistance to achieve them. These reforms range from defence modernisation to better governance and rule of law and are complementary to BiH's EU path,” the embassy said.
The statement comes days after the Council of Ministers of Bosnia and Herzegovina endorsed the implementation of the Reform Programme for NATO and approved the formation of a commission in charge of cooperation with NATO.
Bosnia sent its first Reform Programme in December 2019.
“The United States will continue to support BiH's reform priorities guided by the BiH-led Reform Programme process. NATO's focus in BiH is on a strong partnership and the door to membership remains open,” stressed the Embassy, adding that any future decision to invite BiH to join the Alliance would be taken “based on consensus among all Allies and within BiH's government.”
