The Vranica mountain represents the geographical center of Bosnia and Herzegovina and its composition and structure is more rugged than the surrounding limestone-dolomite mountains of BiH. N1 is proud to present magnificent photos of the mountain, recorded by photographer Boris Trograncic.
Vranica mountain is known for its unique lake of glacial origin, the Prokosko Lake, located at 1,635 meters above sea level.
Vranica has several peaks that exceed 2000 meters in height, and the oldest geological deposits originating from the older Paleozoic have been found in the area. It is the largest Paleozoic core of the Bosnian-Herzegovinian mountains. The highest parts of the mountain are extensive mountain pastures, while the lower parts are abundant with forests.
The mountain lies on a volcanic belt, and in the immediate vicinity is the long-extinguished mega-volcano Tethys. This mountain is home to the endemic amphibian (lizard) Triton (Triturus Alpestris Reiseri).
