A comparison of the same period in 2025 and 2026 shows that the total number of fires in West Herzegovina Canton increased by 94 percent, while the number of technical interventions remained approximately the same.
The total area affected by fires increased by 78 percent compared with the same period last year, from 1,166 hectares between January and September 2025 to 2,071 hectares in 2026.
"The figures clearly show that this year's fire season has been particularly challenging and, interestingly, it is still ongoing. For example, as many as eight fires were recorded in West Herzegovina Canton on the last day of September alone, burning more than 60 hectares of land," the administration warned.
It added that firefighters from four professional fire brigades and nine volunteer fire departments, involving more than 120 firefighters, took part in firefighting operations, along with firefighters from the neighboring Herzegovina-Neretva and Canton 10
