Women In Black to commemorate Srebrenica genocide with silent vigil In Belgrade

The movement describes the Srebrenica genocide as the greatest war crime committed in Europe since the Second World War. They stated that the regime of Slobodan Milosevic was complicit by providing extensive political, military, logistical, and financial support to the Army of Republika Srpska. The group recalls that the International Court of Justice found Serbia responsible for violating the Genocide Convention in 2007, while the International Criminal Tribunal for the former Yugoslavia established the individual criminal responsibility of numerous members of Serbian formations acting in pursuit of a Greater Serbia.

Regarding the UN General Assembly Resolution adopted on May 23, 2024, which designated July 11 as the International Day of Reflection and Commemoration, the movement criticized Serbia for voting against it. They stated that instead of embracing the resolution to clear Serbia's name, the regime led by Aleksandar Vucic has waged a brutal campaign against it, manipulating the public by claiming acknowledgment would label the Serbian people as genocidal.

The movement states that Serbia continues a state policy of genocide denial, protecting and glorifying convicted war criminals while the public sphere lacks compassion for the victims. They call on Serbia to recognize the genocide to respect the dignity of the victims and join the democratic international community. Finally, Women in Black confirmed they will participate in the July 11 commemoration and funeral at the Potocari Memorial Centre.
