Zara, a search dog from the Croatian Mountain Rescue Service (HGSS), is playing a key role in aiding flood victims in Bosnia and Herzegovina.
“Our Zara,” HGSS announced, sharing images of the dedicated dog tirelessly searching for survivors in Jablanica, an area severely impacted by the floods.
“HGSS teams are on their way to assist our colleagues in Bosnia and Herzegovina, where severe flooding and landslides have caused widespread damage. The team includes 11 HGSS members, equipped with 4 off-road vehicles and 2 boats from stations in Sibenik, Dubrovnik, and Orebic, along with our search dog, Zara,” HGSS said in their statement as they set out for Bosnia.
The rescue teams had to navigate difficult terrain to reach Donja Jablanica, one of the hardest-hit areas. Once there, they delivered essential supplies to the local health centre and are expected to be deployed to other affected locations. In total, 11 HGSS members are on-site with their vehicles from different HGSS stations, supported by Zara, who is actively participating in the search for missing individuals.
The flooding, which began Thursday night, has claimed at least 22 lives in Bosnia and Herzegovina.
Earlier reports indicated a slightly lower death toll. Two days ago, the government of the Herzegovina-Neretva Canton corrected its figures, stating that 13 individuals, rather than 14 as previously reported by the local police, had died. Tragically, the number of casualties continued to rise over the following days.
