Leptospirosis outbreak in Sarajevo's Dobrinja neighbourhood, institute requests declaration of epidemic

Several cases of leptospirosis have been reported in Sarajevo, specifically in the municipality of Novi Grad. Sarajevo Canton Health Minister Enis Hasanovic confirmed in a statement to N1 that the Cantonal Institute of Public Health has requested a declaration of an epidemic in a limited area due to the emergence of leptospirosis.

At a Sarajevo Canton Assembly session, Minister Hasanovic stated that both autumn and spring deratization had been carried out, and that corrective measures were even implemented in Dobrinja.

He announced that the Cantonal Institute of Public Health would reveal all information at a press conference.

In response to media reports about the appearance of symptoms suggesting potential infectious disease among residents in the Novi Grad municipality, especially in the Dobrinja neighborhood, the Clinical Center of the University of Sarajevo (KCUS) issued the following statement:

"According to the most recent data from the Clinical Microbiology Department at KCUS, from May 14 to May 21, 2025, 17 laboratory-confirmed cases of leptospirosis were reported to the Sarajevo Canton Institute of Public Health. Eight patients were tested by the Sarajevo Canton Health Centers, predominantly from the Novi Grad Health Center, while nine patients were tested at the KCUS Infectious Diseases Clinic," the statement reads.
