African swine fever virus has been confirmed at 560 farms in Bosnia and Herzegovina, while 28,784 animals have been euthanised to date due to infection.
The virus presence was confirmed at 463 farms and 26,788 pigs were euthanised in Republika Srpska entity, which makes nearly half of the country's territory, while in the other half, the Federation entity, the virus was confirmed at 30 farms with 196 animals euthanised to date. In Brcko District, a small administrative unit in the north, 67 farms confirmed the virus presence and 1,800 animals have been euthanised, according to the Veterinary Office within the Ministry of Foreign Trade and Economic Relations of BiH.
The press release concerning the situation with the virus spread said that the Veterinary Office of Bosnia and Herzegovina is continuously working on finding donor funds that can help in the fight against African swine fever.
“Assistance consisting of several pallets of laboratory equipment was provided through the Austrian Agency for Health and Food Safety (AGES) and negotiations are ongoing with the Embassy of China in Bosnia and Herzegovina regarding the procurement of additional equipment. The office previously sent a request for help to the World Organization for Animal Health (WOAH), the Food and Agriculture Organization of the United Nations (FAO) and the European Commission,” according to the Veterinary Office.
