Member countries of the Organization of Islamic Cooperation (OIC) supported the Draft Resolution of the United Nations General Assembly declaring July 11 as the International Day of Reflection and Commemoration of the Genocide in Srebrenica, stressing the importance for the international community in preventing the recurrence of such events.
The declaration expressing this support was adopted at the 15th two-day session of the member countries, which ended today in Banjul, the capital of Gambia.
A total of 57 member countries voted in favour of it.
The summit was held under the motto “Strengthening unity and solidarity through dialogue for sustainable development,” and among other things, it dealt with other important issues in the Islamic world.
Russia has actively lobbied Muslim countries not to vote for the Resolution, so this expression of support could be a turning point in their attitude towards the Resolution, which the UN General Assembly will vote on in the middle of the month.
