Photos taken by Bosnian Damir Sagolj are part of a series of photographs that brought the Reuters news agency one of their two Pulitzer Prizes for this year on Monday.

The news agency was recognized for its international reporting on the methods of police killing squads in the Philippines and for feature photography documenting the Rohingya refugee crisis in Myanmar and Bangladesh.

The Pulitzer prize is considered the most prestigious award in American journalism.

“In a year in which many Pulitzer prizes were rightly devoted to U.S. domestic matters, we’re proud at Reuters to shine a light on global issues of profound concern and importance,” said Reuters Editor-in-Chief, Stephen J. Adler.

Four of the photos showing the violence endured by the Rohingya, a Muslim minority, as they are fled Myanmar for Bangladesh, were taken by Bosnian Damir Sagolj, Reuters Photojournalist of the year in 2017.

“The extraordinary photography of the mass exodus of the Rohingya people to Bangladesh demonstrates not only the human cost of conflict but also the essential role photojournalism can play in revealing it,” Adler said.

“We all like awards, but I am especially fond of those that are not for some ‘incident’(…) but for the best job done over a certain period of time,” Sagolj said. “These kind of awards are more important to me than those given for luck or instant inspiration.”
