Former Interior Minister: Police not respected enough

The former Interior Minister of the Canton of Sarajevo Nermin Pecanac told N1 that Police is not respected as much as it deserves. The state does not have adequate mechanisms to help law enforcement agencies.

Pecanac touched upon the Tuesday shooting between the police and two suspects attempting to steal a car, during which two police officers were injured.

“We always said an attack on the police is an attack on the state and this is the same for every country. The question is, what can the state do to assist its police in doing their job. Our state hasn’t the mechanisms to assist the law enforcement agencies in the country,” Pecanac said.

When talking about security, we tend to think of the police, only. The police are doing their job, but the question of security is not just a question of our police.”

The former official told N1 that the police is not respected as much as it deserves.

“I think the police is performing its part of the job well, but it needs the necessary logistics from other institutions as well. Some time ago we’ve had several escapes from jails. If we were to visit those jails, I guarantee you that nothing drastic had improved over there,” he said.

Pecanac added that today’s criminals do not hesitate from anything.

“Today’s criminals do not hesitate from doing anything. A good part of our engagement must be devoted to detecting illegal arms and preventing the smuggling of those arms. Around 95 percent of all criminal offences were committed using illegal firearms,” he concluded.
