Search for survivors, casualties continues in Greece

An N1 crew reported on Wednesday from the scene of devastating fires in southern Greece that the authorities are continuing their search for survivors and casualties.

Talk about the fires focuses on how powerful the blaze was, N1’s reporter Gordana Bjeletic said and added that the flames spread so fast that they overtook people trying to escape.

“Hundreds of people, both local and tourists, fled towards the sea to save themselves but some of them panicked and drowned. Most of the victims died fleeing towards the sea but the flames were faster,” the reporter said.

“We arrived during the night and it was a eerie sight. You know you’ve arrived because you can barely breathe. The further inland the harder it is to breathe,” she added.   The danger now is from collapsing houses and high-power cables.

Firefighters are patrolling the area to prevent possible new fires along with the military and the police who have allowed local people back to see what’s left of their homes.
