Two Serbian opposition parties are calling for the dismissal of ultra-nationalist MP Vjerica Radeta from the post of deputy parliament speaker following an offensive tweet about the death of the Mothers of Srebrenica organization which rallies the families of victims of the 1995 massacre.

Radeta, a ranking official of the Serbian Radical Party (SRS), tweeted on Tuesday that she on said that she had read that “Hatidza Mehmedovic from the association of Srebrenica businesswomen has died. Who is going to bury her? The husband or her sons?”. Mehmedovic lost her husband and sons in the Srebrenica massacre which was ruled by two international courts to have been an act of genocide. Radeta deleted the tweet following condemnation from the public and state officials in Serbia and her Twitter account was de-activated the following day but it’s not clear by who.

Democratic Party (DS) MPs demanded her dismissal over what they called “impermissible hate speech against the victims of Srebrenica”.

“The impermissible hate speech by the deputy parliament speaker, cruelly addressing the innocent victims of the crime committed in Srebrenica and insults to their families has jeopardised the reputation of parliament which she represents and we demand her urgent removal from the post,” a DS statement said.

The DS demand to dismiss Radeta from her post was followed by a letter from Liberal Democrat Party (LDP) leader Cedomir Jovanovic to all MP groups, calling them not to attend any session of parliament until Radeta resigns or is dismissed. “Radeta’s actions are unacceptable,” the LDP leader’s letter said and added that she used “anti-civilization words to attack the deceased head of the Mothers of Srebrenica Hatidza Mehmedovic, shamelessly mocking her sacrifice and the victims in her family. This was a woman who lost her husband and two sons in the genocide committed in Srebrenica. What Radeta did after her death is something that no normal person in this country can agree with”.
