The City of Sarajevo adopted an initiative on Wednesday to name a street or a square in the city after recently deceased US Senator John McCain, the City Administration said on Wednesday.

“Senator John McCain was a great friend of Bosnia and Herzegovina. He was calling the things their right names in hard moments and he was seeking for more just solutions for our country,” said Abdulah Skaka, the city mayor, who launched the initiative.

“Sarajevo and Bosnia and Herzegovina will in this way secure a permanent memory of his historic role in building up and cherishing of brotherly and friendly relations between the peoples of Bosnia and Herzegovina and the United States of America,” he added.

Skaka informed the city councillors about visiting the McCain's grave during his visit to the USA, where he symbolically laid flags of Bosnia and the City of Sarajevo.

“We highly appreciate his contribution in the great support that the American people provided for the people of Bosnia and Herzegovina,” said the mayor pointing out that the late senator had paid several visits to Sarajevo during his political career and had established a special connection with this country.

Skaka noted that he signed an important memorandum of cooperation with the Marshall Legacy Institute during his visit to Washington, which, as he said, opened door to the implementation of projects aimed at clearing Sarajevo completely from mines by the year of 2020.

“We also held a series of important talks in the American Congress, State Department, and strengthened the connections of Sarajevo with friends in the USA, and we opened possibilities of deeper cooperation,” he added.
