A drunk driver ran over a woman with four children in the central Bosnian town of Novi Travnik on Friday evening, killing a mother and her daughter.
The perpetrator, born in 1988, was arrested at the scene. According to prosecutors, his blood-alcohol level was above three per cent at the time of the arrest.
“A woman with the initials A.H., born in 1988, as well as a girl, a minor, died as a result of yesterday’s accident,” said the Interior Ministry of the Central-Bosnian Canton, where the Novi Travnik is located.
The three other children were injured, two of them so severely that they had to be urgently transported to the hospital in Sarajevo.
Local authorities have on Saturday decided to declare December 8 a day of mourning in the Novi Travnik municipality.
Local resident Adem Kuric, who lives near the place where the accident happened, said his daughter saw the driver speeding and hitting the woman and her children. He said she was distraught and that the family had not slept all night.
“We all know how fast people drive here, I live here. The killer drove by here every day while drunk,” he said, adding that the community will gather on Saturday to pay respects to those who died and ask local authorities “if they feel even a little responsible” for what happened.
