Serbia will always stand with Republika Srpska (RS), Bosnia’s semi-autonomous Serb majority region, as the RS may be a bigger national interest for Serbia than Kosovo, said Serbia’s Foreign Minister, Ivica Dacic, on Saturday.
Dacic, the leader of the Socialist Party of Serbia (SPS) made the statement as he held a speech at the 10th SPS Congress which was also attended by the Serb member of Bosnia’s tripartite Presidency, Milorad Dodik, and the leader of the Socialist Party in Bosnia, Petar Djokic.
Dacic said that as a guarantor and signatory of the 1995 Dayton Peace Agreement, Serbia strongly supports the deal that established Republika Srpska and that represents the greatest feat of the Serb people in the 20th century.
“It is Serbia’s obligation to cooperate with Republika Srpska, but also with Serb representatives in Croatia, Macedonia and Montenegro, and to protect the Serb people. Nobody can dissuade us from it,” he said.
Dacic said that Serbia advocates respecting the UN Resolution 1244, which is the only international legal document that guarantees Serbia’s sovereignty and integrity.
He also said that Serbia will never recognise Kosovo’s independence and accept such humiliation.
“Serbia may not and cannot be humiliated. We can only accept a just compromise,” he said, adding that there is no power that could make Serbia enter the EU at the expense of its national interests and its recognition of Kosovo as independent as this would be a “dishonourable offer.”
Serbia wants to become an EU member, but without its national interests being hurt, he said.
“Serbia wants friendly relations with all countries in the world, as well as brotherly relations with regional countries. We should not hate each other - if we are together, we are stronger,” he said.
Serbia is at a critical point regarding Kosovo, he said, adding that this generation should solve the issue for the sake of long-term peace and stability.
“Today, no solution for Kosovo can be made without Serbia’s involvement,” he said.
He accused Pristina of acting like a “spoiled brat when it does not get what it wants” and said that its “political parents” are not thinking about punishing it.
He pointed out that 12 countries have retracted their recognition of Kosovo recently and that Pristina’s membership in UNESCO and Interpol were rejected, which bothers both Pristina and its political supporters as they cannot get what they want and what they worked on for decades while breaching international law and accusing Serbia of genocide and ethnic cleansing.
The Serb people are the biggest victims of ethnic cleansing and genocide in Croatia, Bosnia and Herzegovina and Kosovo, Dacic said.
