European Commissioner Johannes Hahn said on Thursday that the Western Balkans region is part of Europe, adding that the integration of that region’s countries is ongoing every day.

“Geography is destiny. The Western Balkans is part of Europe. We share a common past, geography, cultural heritage, we share common opportunities and challenges today and in future. We are destined for each other. There should be no doubt that the Western Balkans is inside the European Union,” Hahn said at the Berlin Process-Western Balkans summit in Poland.

He said the entire region should follow North Macedonia’s example and step up reforms, especially in rule of law, basic rights and good governance. “A strong and stable economy is not possbile without respect for those basics. They are crucial to achieving a predictable business environment,” Hahn said.
