The organisations ‘Fridays for future’ and ‘Climate save Bosnia’ organised a peaceful protest in Sarajevo on Friday to raise awareness about the deforestation of the Brazilian Amazon.

The protest came after new Brazilian President Jair Bolsonaro announced more deforestation.

“We want to point out that the newly elected President of Brazil, Jair Bolsonaro, has in his campaign announced the deforestation of the Amazon to meet the needs of the food or cattle industry. This is why activities like this (the protest) have now been organised across the world,” said head of the ‘Climate save Bosnia’ organisation, Maida Sabeta.

She added that the protests are being organised because this is an issue that concerns people across the world.

“The Amazon forests are the lungs of the planet. Brazilian forests are exclusively being cut down because of the meat industry,” she said, explaining why the protesters are asking for the Amazon to not be turned into hamburgers.

According to UN data, an acre of the Amazon is cut down every six seconds, and soy, corn and wheat is grown in its place, and it is then forwarded to the cattle industry, she explained.

Similar activities are taking place across the world and will also take place in the northeastern town of Tuzla, organisers said.
