In a tweet posted on Tuesday, the US Embassy in Sarajevo expressed support for a female Armed Forces member who was recently physically attacked in Banja Luka, calling violence against women “deplorable.”

Dajana Dangubic said a man sat next to her and her friend on June 30th and attacked them after she asked him to leave. She said he grabbed her by the neck and punched her in the face.

“We reached out to Dajana, audacious woman, AFBiH soldier and alum of USG programs. Violence against women is deplorable. We applaud her for her courage in speaking out about her experience. We continue to stand with her and others who endure physical and emotional violence,” the US Embassy posted.

Dangubic said that she would not have even mentioned it but that she was provoked by “the way how police handled it.”

She said police did not take her seriously.

“It is beneath my dignity for a police officer to discriminate and tell me ‘Listen, girl, you were walking in the park in the evening, did you provoke him?’,” she said, adding that she suspects the officer spoke to her that way because he suspected she was gay.

The attack caused outrage on social media and sparked reactions from, among others, columnist Dragan Bursac and UK Ambassador in the country, Matt Field.
