Scores of tourists from across the world have again spent the weekend on Bjelasnica mountain near Sarajevo, visiting the villages of Umoljani, Sinanovici, Sabici and Lukomir, an almost medieval settlement at 1,450 metres altitude.

The once almost forgotten remote villages on the southern side of the rough Olympic mountain have over the decades been almost abandoned by residents who sought an easier life in the city.

But in recent years the picturesque hamlets and their wooden huts where time appears to stand still have been revived thanks to tourists who have started discovering them and enjoying their beauty.

Now, 22 homes in the most attractive village of Lukomir are open to visitors and the almost forgotten path along the nearby spectacular Rakitnica canyon was over the weekend a crowded tourist attraction, filled with local visitors but also those from Germany, Austria and the Czech Republic.

The canyon of the Rakitnica river is one of the steepest in Europe and in its vicinity, visitors can enjoy the meanders oftheStudeni Potok, watermills, medieval Bosnian tombstones and a rock that appears to have a petrified dragon plastered on it.
