One of the most distinctive landmarks of the city of Sarajevo, the City Hall, has appeared in new shape on Sunday evening after the city authorities equipped it with new illumination.
Two days after it marked the 27th anniversary of the wartime destruction, the symbol of Sarajevo looks more attractive than ever before.
“It seemed to me that it was not possible to make the City Hall look more beautiful than it is. But, now we can see how the illumination designed by master Srdjo Hristofovic emphasised the City Hall in a special way, and it is clear that this investment was worth it,” said Sarajevo Mayor, Abdulah Skaka, speaking at the ceremony of unveiling the new illumination project.
“The City Hall is the treasure of the City of Sarajevo, the national monument and now it is becoming an institution that lives and justifies every investment. It was our special wish to present this project on the day of remembrance when the criminals tried to destroy our history and our identity,” he added.
The Sarajevo City Hall was initially opened during the Austro-Hungarian rule in Bosnia and was completely destroyed in a fire in the 1992-95 Bosnian war.
Reconstruction began in 1996 and the building was reopened on May 9, 2014.
Designed in the Moorish Revival style, it stands dominant in the Sarajevo Old Town area, said the illumination project author, Srdja Hristofovic.
“As such, it was treated that way in the illumination project. The lights emphasised all details that matter in architecture,” he said.
