The European Energy Community (EC) has not expanded sanctions against Bosnia which were introduced because the country breached its obligations from the Energy Community Treaty, Foreign Trade and Economic Affairs Minister Mirko Sarovic said on Friday after participating in an EC meeting.
“After a thorough discussion, we managed to secure that further sanctions will not be introduced against Bosnia and Herzegovina. Our stances were met with support from some other member countries and a consensus on voting for introducing sanctions was simply not reached,” Sarovic said.
The minister said he hopes that Bosnia’s Government will use its time wisely and agree on adopting key documents and decisions in the energy sector.
The Law on Electricity and Gas of Bosnia and Herzegovina, which the Ministry of Foreign Trade and Economic Relations submitted two years ago, needs to urgently be adopted and with that, “apart from sanctions, further damage the energy sector and all citizens are suffering should be avoided,” Sarovic said.
The European Energy Community has previously announced that the sanctions that are already in place for the country will be expanded because Bosnia did not implement certain measures from the agreement and that any additional sanctions will mean the suspension of rights within the Energy Community for the country.
