Bosnia must increase the capacities of its Border Police so it can respond to the wave of migrants and protect the border adequately, State Security Minister, Fahrudin Radoncic, and Interior Minister of the Republika Srpska (RS) region, Dragan Lukac, said in a joint press conference on Friday.

According to Lukac, RS police already closely cooperates with the Border Police and 100 of their officers are currently deployed at the state border.

Considering the migrant situation at the border between Turkey and Greece, Lukac said that “we are expecting an escalation of the situation here as well and must cooperate to respond to any possible problems.”

Radoncic emphasised that it is important that RS and state authorities agree on increasing border police capacities since this requires a budget.

“We have initiated certain activities in order to secure funds for at least another 400 Border Police officers, although 1200 of them are necessary,” he said.

The Security Minister also said he expects help from local and international officials and that Bosnia “must not be turned into a parking spot for migrants,” especially in light of the Turkey-Greece border situation.
