The US Secretary of State, Michael Pompeo, banned a former lawmaker in Bosnia’s Federation (FBiH) region and member of the main Bosniak party in the country, Amir Zukic, from entering the United States due to his “involvement in significant corruption.”
Zukic, the former General Secretary of the Party for Democratic Action (SDA) and member of the FBiH House of Representatives, is among a group of officials charged with trading in influence and illegal employment in public companies.
“Today, I am announcing the public designation of former Representative Amir Zukic of Bosnia and Herzegovina due to his involvement in significant corruption,” said the statement by Pompeo, published on the US Department of Defense.
“In his official capacity (…) Zukic was involved in corrupt acts that undermined the rule of law in Bosnia and Herzegovina,” it said.
According to the statement, “once the Secretary of State designates officials of foreign governments for their involvement, directly or indirectly, in significant corruption, those individuals and their immediate family members are ineligible for entry into the United States.”
